Melanotan 2 is a cyclic synthetic analogue of α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH) with broad melanocortin receptor agonism (MC1R, MC3R, MC4R, MC5R). MC1R activation on melanocytes stimulates melanogenesis — eumelanin (brown/black pigment) production — producing UV-independent skin tanning, the compound's defining characteristic in research. MC4R agonism in the hypothalamus drives the sexual arousal and appetite suppression effects (shared mechanism with PT-141).
MC5R activation affects exocrine gland function. Research applications span photoprotection models (melanin is a UV absorber), sexual dysfunction, anorexia studies and melanocortin system mapping. Considerably more potent than natural α-MSH due to the cyclic structure conferring resistance to enzymatic degradation.
