Compound degradation from improper storage is one of the most common causes of failed research experiments and inconsistent results. Peptides are particularly susceptible — even minor temperature excursions or repeated freeze-thaw cycles can cause aggregation, oxidation, deamidation, and loss of bioactivity that HPLC may not fully detect. This guide covers storage requirements across all major research compound classes.
Storage by Compound Class#
Peptides (lyophilized — unreconstituted)#
| Compound | Recommended storage | Shelf life | Key sensitivities |
|---|---|---|---|
| BPC-157 (lyophilized) | −20°C | 3–5 years | Freeze-thaw cycles; oxidation |
| TB-500 (lyophilized) | −20°C | 3–5 years | Oxidation at C-terminal Cys |
| Ipamorelin (lyophilized) | −20°C | 3+ years | Moderate stability |
| CJC-1295 DAC (lyophilized) | −20°C | 3+ years | Stable; DAC adds stability |
| PT-141 (lyophilized) | −20°C | 2–3 years | Stable lyophilized |
| Semaglutide (lyophilized) | −20°C or 2–8°C | 2–3 years | Quite stable |
| Retatrutide (lyophilized) | −20°C | 2+ years | Follow manufacturer spec |
Peptides (reconstituted — in BAC water)#
| Condition | Duration | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2–8°C | 28 days | Standard for BAC water-reconstituted; keep away from light |
| −20°C | Not recommended | Ice crystals → aggregation; BAC water has poor freeze-thaw stability |
| Room temp (>20°C) | 24–48h maximum | For same-day use only |
Injectable Anabolic Steroids (oil-based)#
| Compound | Storage | Shelf life (sealed) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Testosterone enanthate | RT (15–25°C) | 3+ years | Stable in oil; avoid freezing (crashes out) |
| Nandrolone decanoate | RT | 3+ years | Very stable esterified compound |
| Trenbolone acetate | RT, dark | 2–3 years | Slightly more photosensitive |
| Drostanolone propionate | RT | 3+ years | Stable |
Oral Research Compounds#
| Compound | Storage | Shelf life |
|---|---|---|
| Stanozolol tablets | RT, dark, dry | 3+ years |
| Oxandrolone tablets | RT, dark, dry | 3+ years |
| MK-677 capsules | RT, dark, dry | 2–3 years |
| LGD-4033 liquid/capsules | RT, dark, dry | 2+ years |
| Cardarine capsules | RT, dark, dry | 2+ years |
The Freeze-Thaw Problem for Peptides#
Why repeated freeze-thaw degrades peptides:
- Ice crystal formation → mechanical disruption of peptide structure → aggregation
- Concentration gradients during freezing → localized high-concentration pockets → aggregation nucleation
- pH shifts during freezing (phosphate buffers shift pH dramatically at −20°C) → chemical degradation
Best practice:
- Aliquot reconstituted peptides into single-use volumes before freezing (if freezing is required)
- Never refreeze a thawed peptide vial
- If BAC water reconstituted: keep at 2–8°C; do not freeze
Lyophilized peptide freeze-thaw: Lyophilized powder tolerates freeze-thaw well (no ice crystals in solid phase). Freeze-thaw sensitivity is primarily a concern for liquid/reconstituted peptides.
Light Sensitivity#
Photosensitive compounds:
- Trenbolone: amber vials recommended; UV light → A-ring isomerization
- Semaglutide: light sensitive; store in original packaging (opaque)
- Some peptides (methionine-containing): Met → Met-sulfoxide under UV → reduces bioactivity
All compounds: Store away from direct sunlight and fluorescent lab light when possible. Vials with amber glass or opaque packaging provide adequate protection.
Humidity and Lyophilized Compound Integrity#
- Lyophilized powders are hygroscopic — they absorb moisture from air
- Moisture uptake → accelerated degradation (hydrolysis, aggregation)
- Never open vials in humid environments
- Reconstitute quickly: inject BAC water, swirl to dissolve, recap immediately
- Do not leave reconstituted vials uncapped
Shipping and Cold Chain#
| Compound type | Acceptable shipping condition | Maximum transit time at ambient |
|---|---|---|
| Lyophilized peptides | Ambient (if <25°C, <72h) | 72h recommended maximum |
| Reconstituted peptides | Cold chain (ice packs) required | Not recommended at ambient |
| Oil-based injectables | Ambient | No limit (stable formulation) |
| Oral compounds | Ambient | No limit |
